Lori Kelsey,

Even before deciding to apply for the clinical intership offered by Barefoot Medicine, I completed three of the individual online couses (composed of audio lectures, written materials and video demonstration). These couses alone significantly improved my clinical skills and patient outcomes immediately).

I found the best part of the overall HBA training program to be “the modular format”. Key didactic components are broken-down into individual sections/topics that can be stand alone CEUs without having to make a decision or commitment to the clinical component in Guatemala. In the end, all the modules are preparation for the clinical experience.

Who would benefit from the BFM program?

1. Acupuncture students who seek an alternatve choice to a senior year study abroad experience in China or elsewhere.

2. New Graduates seeking a clinical residency-type experience before embarking on independent/private practice.

3. Medical acupuncturists, other Western health care professionals (Chripractors, Naturopathic MDs, physical therapists), and holistic healthcare practitionr who incorperate Eastern philosophy/ Eastern Medical Theory into their practice.

4. Acupuncturists who are seeking//preparing to transition into working within a Western mainstream medical enviornment.

5. Western Healthcare Administrators interested in, but mystified as to how to launch an Acupuncture service with their healthcare entity.

Christian Nix is a brilliant acupuncturist and we are fortunate to have someone like him opening doors for our profession.”

“Bridging the Chasm is an essential read for any acupuncturist that wants to be successful in the 21st century. It bridges the gap between Western and Eastern medicine and promises a brighter future for both modalities.

Christian Nix is a brilliant acupuncturist and we are fortunate to have someone like him opening doors for our profession.”

“I’ve been a big fan of your work since I first read an article in Acupuncture Today from you a year or so ago. I’ve read all 3 of your books, and have listened to your Fast Track to Mainstream Practice lectures multiple times. You are speaking truth and the future of the medicine that I hear from no one else.

I graduated from a 5 Element School (now, Maryland University of Integrative Health ) and so much of the main concepts you cover in Fast Track have been pinging in the back of my head these past 3 years. I haven’t found anyone who has been able to clearly identify these somewhat fuzzy concepts in my brain, let alone clarify them and expound upon them.

Someone who can and has bridged the language gap to reach both the Western medical profession and the Mainstream, is the person I want to learn from. So, yes, that is my little fan girl rant, but suffice to say I have a ton of respect for you, and am looking forward to learning everything I can from you.”

“I bought the book (Bridging the Chasm), what an excellent resource.

I consider you one of my mentors and with your help, I’ve communicated with patients and Navy medical personnel in my unit in ways that bring so much more legitimacy to our practice.”

“Whether or not you are seeking a career within a mainstream setting or simply looking to grow and elevate your own practice, Christian Nix is the absolute best resource for expediting your learning curve and full potential as an acupuncturist. Christian is without a doubt, the pioneer when it comes to educating the mainstream medical community and elevating acupuncture and East Asian medicine to its true potential – a potential that is in great need to serve the ever-growing patient population here in the U.S.

Christian’s expertise, practical insights and wealth of progressive coursework have been instrumental in growing my practice and career, not to mention saving me years of headache and struggle with direct mentoring. I have only been in practice for a short 4 years but feel privileged to have practiced acupuncture in every clinical setting imaginable. This array of experience has clarified what I value most in my career: reaching a broader patient population and garnering true respect and appreciation for what our profession brings to the collective health care system.

Before working with Christian I didn’t have the skill set needed to broaden and execute my acupuncture practice in a way that would help me achieve my career goals and I certainly had no clear direction on where to begin. Quickly after diving into Christian’s coursework and attending his hospital based acupuncture “Boot Camp” I was able to implement drastic changes that jump started my career path. I cliff-thomsoncan say with true conviction that without being exposed to Christians progressive approach, I would not have been able to bridge the gap between East and West and would still be in the dark trying to figure out how elevate my career.

Utilizing the tools and mentoring Christian has provided I have greatly increased my clinical effectiveness and have successfully built strong referral relationships with various mainstream medical professionals and have even been asked by the medical director of a major University to speak to their entire provider group and administration about how acupuncture and East Asian medicine can benefit their patient population.”

“I am still working on the guide, “Bridging the Chasm.” The content is great. If anyone thinks it’s too forward they are probably not someone equipped to make it in the mainstream, working with Western medical professionals.

What you are sharing has precisely been my experience when talking to medical students, residents and MD’s. They want to hear the facts – nothing more, nothing less.

A lot of what you mention is exactly what we are up against. I really appreciate the way you articulate the reality of the inclusion of holistic medicine into the mainstream medical setting.

Looking forward to reading more! It’s very helpful. Thanks for what you are doing.”

“Thank you so much for your e-book Bridging the Chasm! The parts about the seven most commonly asked questions by doctors and the section on research really helped me feel confident and comfortable when I had the opportunity to answer questions about acupuncture at a Complementary and Alternative Medicine Fair for medical students.”

“The ‘Fast Implementation Boot Camp’ was key in helping me knock a recent public presentation out of the park. It helped me hone the topic, convey simple yet powerful take-aways, and build rapport with the audience.

I was confident and it showed. Educating the public is an essential skill for our profession to grow.

This program gives you a recipe for learning those skills. It is a must for practitioners who want to grow their practices and thrive in the evolving medical world. I can’t wait to give more presentations.”

Great value, and really good information on talking to doctors and understanding their relationship to what we do. Obviously there is much more to be said on this topic, but this was a great, usable set of tools. I work in a hospital a few hours a week and frequently talk to the doctors of my private practice clients, and I can already see how this will be useful. I liked the many references that were offered to learn more.

Loved the presentation practice and marketing basics. This course was phenomenal, exactly what I needed to become re-inspired and motivated to take acupuncture to a bigger scale and population level. I can’t wait to get more involved and implement this in my community. Thanks!

Wow! What a worthwhile course! I was glad to have the chance to work on clinical skills and receive feedback on needling. Learning about using correct language for speaking to doctors and patients is priceless. I cannot wait to begin implementing what I have learned.

Jose: This Externship allowed me to work together with students and other practitioners to frame my teaching and break it down into specific parts, understanding exactly how to teach students – into very specific modules – and the right way of being able to work with actual students, in the field, in the clinic and in teaching professors.

To just be able to break down diagnosis and actual clinical skills immediately and then facilitate their learning as well as mine . . .

Nix: So, it really helped you organized your own approach as a teacher then!

Jose: Absolutely! Ya, absolutely!

Nix: Good! And what about solidifying the importance stuff for the hospital-based kind of mainstream practice – there is a difference no? This is a difference between what passes for ‘OK’ in private practice versus what you gotta do in front of doctors? Yes?

Jose: Absolutely!

The talk went great! I took Christian’s advice and really got the audience engaged in the dialogue. It made everyone really participate. We had a long Q and A and two people happily volunteered to get the demo. I think it was very effective! I’m getting much more comfortable with the talks and its less about the script and more about talking to the people and reaching them at their level . . . Talking to them about what THEY want to talk about.

When I started acupuncture school I hoped to learn and understand the logic behind Traditional Chinese kim-headshot Medicine. In my training I learned about the many different theories — 4 Stage, yin-yang, 8 Principles, et al — I never received any instruction on the logic of holism as a system. I finished school with a collection of signs, symptoms and points memorized with no clear framework for how to apply this knowledge practically.

After only a few hours of work with CPSC and HBA Training, I recognized the missing piece of my education!

Finally, the light of logic elucidated my acupuncture practice and the results were immediate. I gained the confidence I had been searching for since graduation AND my patients noticed an improvement of efficacy within the first week.

First, I read the Tao of Integration Vol. 2 this weekend. Twice!! I couldn’t put it down. I found every passage relevant. I think I have a different understanding of the work and also I hold myself in a different position in relation to the field of TCM now. Anyway, I really loved it!

Yesterday I had a resident come to clinic to observe. It went really well. I tried to incorporate all of the advice you had given me up to this point. I really focused on pattern discrimination. She was there about 2 hours. Towards the end I advised her to come back on a day when Maria was in clinic. Then a minor miracle happened! I told her that I would welcome any feedback and I’m still working with Maria and Christian to get my communication component down with the Western medical world. I admitted that acupuncturists tend to talk in a code that we understand but can isolate us from outsiders. She looked me straight in the eye and said that doctors have the same problem. In that single moment, I knew the bridge had been built and there was a level of empathy and understanding between us. It was awesome!

I love this course and I’m thrilled about the video training your program shares.

I learned more from you than I’ve learned attending the TCM school I recently completed. Thank you so much for doing what you do and bringing such important training skills to practitioners. I guarantee that I will be utilizing my training for the community where I live.

Dr. Choyan Hsieh

DAOM and Professor of Chinese Medicine
I finally finished reading the book “Hospital based acupuncture essentials”. This is a total new topic for me. Sorry I have hard time to finish earlier.

There are many hospitals in China have TCM departments but I only some in Taiwan. There are only three universities have Traditional Chinese medicine colleges. The oldest university with graduated students (8 years of training) usually chose to become western medical doctor before but more chose to become TCM doctors now.

I can see HBA will be the mainstream. It is good to have all chronic patients or pain, stressful patients in the hospital seeing an acupuncture physician just as they all need to consult with other professional doctors…

Then I started to read “Community acupuncture for pain and stress”. I can grasp the content easier.

I really appreciate your practical guide. You are a genius.

I attended a 3-day CEU seminar this weekend in Chicago on how to get your practice into the mainstream, specifically into hospital settings. This has been a goal of mine for the past couple years but I was unsure how to go about it.

This workshop would really help those of us in California trying to navigate the mainstream and it would be great to see CSOMA play a prominent role in that.

The presenter, Christian Nix, did a masterful job of showing us clinical skills, presentation skills, Tracydo’s and don’ts for the mainstream. We toured the clinic he is successfully running at Mercy Hospital and I even shadowed for a day at the hospital.

By far, this is the best CEU course I have ever attended and having this education ensures we have a cohesive and professional face in front of mainstream professionals.

Having acupuncture in a hospital setting is part of our future for sure. Having the know-how to get there and CSOMA’s backing will get us there in a unified way that will attract wanted attention to our profession.

The HBA internship clarified many of the questions and concerns I’ve had since being in private practice.

The logical and level of detail that Christian and Maria use to describe and teach their methods improved my treatments immediately.

The hands on experience allowed me to take what I learned in a teaching environment and immediately put it to use with patients. Their instruction uses solid and logical theory combined with experiential practice.

Christian took a few minutes to explain how to palpate accurately. He demonstrated the technique and then we practiced needling with the palpation technique.

This short exercise improved my patient treatments immediately and my patients commented upon the improvement. The patients like what I have learned and that is the most valuable opinion and feedback to me.

HBA training has aided me to simplify diagnosis and treatment strategy.

The HBA training has made clear the necessity for refining my pattern discrimination as well as the effectiveness of accurate palpation based acupuncture.

The internship at Mercy gave me an opportunity to practice refining my acupuncture technique and to improve on my speed and timing with clients.

“Coaching with Christian Nix has been indispensable. I have taken courses with Christian, and went to the first Chicago Conference on Integration in Medicine at Mercy Hospital, which gave me a solid platform from which to launch my practice into the mainstream. However, one-to-one coaching with Christian has given me the support to really implement my learning, and has helped me to practically problem solve and overcome many of the hurdles that come with integrating a TCM practice into the mainstream medical system. Most importantly, working with Christian has raised my confidence level, and given me the tools to succeed. Christian brings his passion, dedication and years of practical experience to each coaching call. If you are looking to break into the mainstream, the best time and money you will spend is with Christian….honestly!”

After enrolling in the Complete Barefoot Medicine Curriculum, I presented Teishin as an adjunctive therapy in an upscale chiropractic office in New York. The first week I had 12 new patients, all who committed to 2-3 sessions for 3 weeks. Barefoot Medicine Training is a success for my practice. It has developed specificity and high level clinical treatment with protocol to treat patients with Teishin therapy as a stand-alone treatment fo pain, stress, anxiety and depression.

I just listened to your presentation course and I am so thrilled and inspired as I have been stuck on trying to figure out a style of teaching my audience the “why” they should come to acupuncture and seek a Chinese medical practitioner instead of just educating them about acupuncture.

It really gave me the how to incorporate my information and give them a reason why. I am so excited and inspired!! Thank you Christian!

All the best!

Dr. Nix, I have a patient in my Oklahoma clinic who is so impressed with the training I received from you that she’s trying to find a someone for her daughter in the Bloomington area. I was hoping that since the hospital clinical training is up in Chicago that you may know of someone closer to her area that we can send her to. She is pregnant and has pre-clampsia. Do we have a referral list of practitioners with the same training and ethics that we learn from you?

Thank you Christian. The 8 Extraordinary Vessel course was off the hook! Max, our old dog, got into a dead deer and was crapping all over the house for 2 days. He looked like he was going to die. I opened and closed his digestive vessel and hit him with the ‘velvet hammer.’ Today he’s a different dog! Really amazing. I’m going to go through your classes. Maybe even a trip down to you. Many thanks.

Maxx has made a full recovery. I treated my wife for hot flashes and she made it through the night without having one, beginners luck?
If I figure out the hot flash thing we can both retire in a month!. Great material!

Thank you for including the Teishin in the program.

It is just a beautiful work of art and is easy to wear. It has been a conversation piece that has allowed me an opening to discuss Teishin, TCM, and can do a treatment right then.I chose lavender and wear it with everything and any color. The size and simplicity is nice for a man or woman and for any sized person.

Auricular Therapy is well received and has been very good for head aches and sciatic pain.It also allows for learning a lot about the client and connects the TCM theory together.

Although acupuncture isn’t in my scope, the TCM program has allowed me to communicate with clients and I have referred clients to an acupuncturist who has referred massage clients to me as well. A holistic team approach is the beginning of a positive shift in wellness education.

TEISHIN INSTITUTE is a well thought out program that can take a massage therapist to a higher level of understanding of TCM in a step by step format that is easy to understand and build upon.

Christian is clear and easy to understand in a relaxed way. The audio makes you feel like you are sitting at a round table throwing out ideas and opening your mind.

I encourage massage therapists to consider the TEISHIN INSTITUTE program to increase your education and open the mind up to an old idea.

I am a brain cancer survivor and my goal is to work with cancer patients in a hospital setting. This is why I find your work so inspiring. There is a hospital where I live that wants to be a top tier institution, but because they don’t offer acupuncture services like Duke, Sloan-Ketteing, MD Anderson, or Johns Hopkins they are challenge in this pursuit. I feel that this is an untapped opportunity to bring acupuncture into their conventional fold. My neuro-oncoligist and I talk about the benefits of acupuncture, she’s even provided me with research on the mater. I believe I have my MD champion. I look forward to presenting a program outline to their administration, however aside from their deductive, linear view of acupuncture, funding may be the biggest obstacle for me. So you can see what I want, now I have to find the right avenue to accomplish this goal. I look to you as a pioneer, and that your experience will give me the insight to accomplish this task.

I wanted to take time to say thank you for the great home study courses you offer. As a Licensed Massage Therapist, I was not trained in Holistic Chinese Medicine. After completing your Auricular Therapy and Level 1 Teishin Therapy courses, I now can provide my patients and clients with a level of specificity for the varied pathologies they present with. Learning the system of “Pattern Discrimination” – of how to view the whole person, as taught in your courses, I can now apply the correct therapy for them. I have learned that there is a no one-size fits-all treatment for everyone. Two patients may present with the same complaint and the same symptoms but if you understand the tenets of pattern discrimination in terms of stress, age, weight, diet etc. each may be treated differently. I look forward to completing the entire course offerings. This knowledge is intrinsically rewarding, and profitable as well.
Thank you.

I wanted to thank you for the work you’ve been offering our profession. As a new practitioner I can see the importance of creating great works in journals & papers as being as important as the work we do with individuals in our clinics. One would think, as I did, that creating papers for academic consumption would be intimidating for an alternative health care practitioner. However as I continue to follow your work I can see the potential of how I too can help create bridges and realize it’s not so scary after all! Many Thanks

Christian Nix has a simple message to acupuncturists: Know your field, and know it well.

To fully explore the strengths of Chinese Medicine, one must understand it as a self-sustaining,independent system of knowledge. The challenge now is to integrate acupuncture with other therapies.

While it may be a noble goal to put Chinese medicine in new perspective, doing so can undermine the profession if we venture too far from its inherent strengths.

I consider the education Christian Nix offers to be a series of master classes that help polish one’s understanding of Chinese Medicine and how it will succeed in the mainstream.

Christian often reminds me to clarify my thinking and to go work hard on the basics. Only by doing so can you be clear on pattern discrimination.

Clearness inthought translates to clearness in action. Christian offers classes that will sharpen your theory, needle technique and communication skills.

Christian Nix also has put together a world class seminar on the ways to communicate andexplore your work in a hospital setting.

The next step for Chinese Medicine in the West is its inclusion in Western hospital settings.

The challenge is clear: how can we integrate a 2000 yearold medicine into a modern environment without losing authenticity.

If you want to succeed in ahospital and see great results, this seminar cannot be missed!

The course consists of two components – a theoretical component introducing the concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicines and a practical component on how to apply these principles. As a physician who has been through one of the traditional 300 hour CME training programs, I recognized the value of the traditional course. However, I felt the amount and the quality of information was significant but seemed redundant at times. Dealing with that amount of knowledge and prioritizing it was difficult. I knew that I needed a more hands-on training and better diagnostic skills according to TCM principles. I called Christian and told him that I am not a beginner. He pointed out that he will adapt the course to my needs. He sent the didactic materials and stressed through our few conversations that the content of the course would be different from anything else I had seen and is based on Pattern Diagnosis in TCM. The material is excellent with less stress on knowing more acupoints in favor of a better understanding of holistic theory of diagnosis, as well as the essential kinesthetic skills. My appraisal after going through the course is that it is direct and to the point, a no non-sense training

which gave me a quantum leap in my understanding and practice of acupuncture. After the hands-on training I went back to the didactic. The audio material is awesome. I spend 3-4 hours a day on it.

That week of training made a quantum leap in my understanding of acupuncture in general.

Manual skills will take more time but at least now I get it! Thanks again.

Teishin online courses helped me to understand the theories behind TCM which are essential in applying Teishin Therapy. Teishin courses are easy to comprehend and easy to apply in you practice – I ought to know, I bought the whole curriculum! It is important to have all course curriculum in order to gain a complete understanding of the system of Teishin therapy taught through the Teishin Institute and Barefoot Medicine Training.

I am grateful to have discovered Barefoot Medicine Training. The courses offered for TCM practitioners are a valuable asset that you will not find anywhere else. Going through the course material has revived my passion for this medicine. The course material has given me new confidence in communicating with Western medical professionals about how this medicine works by itself and how it can work in combination with Western medicine as well. I am looking forward to strengthening my knowledge base with the courses offered through Barefoot Medicine Training.

Maria Mulcahy, LAc.

Clinical Supervisor Community Pain and Stress Center, Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois
Hospital Based Acupuncture Training has changed my practice utterly.

For the past 9 years I’ve had a successful private practice and a very satisfying hospital practice that centered on breast cancer survivors. Professionally speaking, not much was missing. After completing HBA Training however, I found myself able to negotiate and implement my long-desired dream of a community-style acupuncture clinic at Mercy Hospital.

Patient response has been tremendous and the hospital administration couldn’t be happier. Not only maria that, I realized that my private practice also needed to change to reflect my new mind-set and skills. I can’t imagine going back to doing hour-long treatments that cater mostly to the privileged class.

In concrete terms, HBA Training and Christian’s mentoring have helped me to think and communicate with compelling clarity about my profession, hone my clinical skills to razor-sharpness, and navigate with a clinical model that effectively and sustainably serves a wider and more diverse patient base than I previously thought possible.

In short, with the skills and insight that I’ve gained through this curriculum and the accompanying hands-on training, I feel it’s possible to have it all – personal success and the added satisfaction of following a model that is likely to have a significant impact not only on the practice of Chinese medicine in the West, but also create positive change for our healthcare system as a whole.

“It was a pleasure, after 7 years of practice, to play the part of student again. Christian was able to distill and clarify some of the finer, yet basic points of TCM, in a way that “lit up” my understanding. The rich wisdom of our medicine became clear in areas I didn’t even realize were not so clear. The almost daily training in Qi Gong provided a much needed dose of self-nourishment that had been missing from my life and from my practice. I re-learned the significance of the adage, “Physician, Health Thyself” . . . Although, this may sound funny for someone who has been in practice as long as I have, I felt (and still feel) able to bask in the joy of the medicine again, partly because of Christian’s passion for it, but also because of his patience and kindness.I did not feel threatened or put off by being corrected on some point location or other, or by being questioned about the functions of the Spleen. Instead, I was happy to know that I knew quite a bit, and was thrilled to be able to fill in some missing pieces. Christian demands clarity and precision. He has obviously worked hard to build relationships of trust and respect with the staff, doctors and patients at the hospital in Santiago de Atitlan, and I felt it was privilege to be invited to share in that. We had a great time. The hospital staff was accommodating and respectful, the patients (mostly Mayan) were beautiful and open-hearted, and the experience itself was priceless. Now that I am back in my own world, my patients have benefited from my clarity, focus, improved needle technique, and self-awareness.”

“My experience in Guatemala was incredible. As a practitioner of TCM, this internship gave me the opportunity to look into the true nature of how traditional medicine works. Interning at the hospital was challenging in ways I could never imagine, and stretched my comprehension, knowledge, foundation and practice of Acupuncture and TCM Diagnosis. Class and clinic were amazing, but the most influential component that has impacted my current and future practice that this internship gave me was the opportunity to look at myself to be able to get out of the way of myself.”

“Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed my time at your training. I learned a lot and it reinforced quite a few things. Seeing how effortlessness herbs were incorporated into the treatment protocol got me on the “herb wagon” again, as I had pushed it aside for the last two semesters. I found that I got more confident in my needling; depth, insertion and manipulation’ wise. I’ve basically overhauled my technique since I’ve been back. It was also great to be reminded that at times we can just “let the needles do the talking” and a lengthy intake in not always what is called for. Also the qigong classes were very useful, especially the explanations of how certain postures affected different areas of the body and what patient population would benefit from them.”

“My experience in Guatemala was nothing short of magical. Christian was a great host, sharing the best of his world with us. Our time at the hospital in the community clinic was rich with first hand experience. Christian demonstrated how fast, effective and confident we can be treating a large number of patients in a short period of time. We learned how to conduct short and thorough intakes, strong needling techniques, and how to make a connection with our patients. He is very skilled at what he does, keeping his work very much within the scope of what is considered internationally accepted TCM standards. I appreciated his insistence upon professionalism. It became clear that in this way, we can see predictable results. Barefoot Medicine is a very accessible and replicable approach in any practice and I now feel confident that I can implement those principles in my practice.”

“As a massage therapist, I found the Teishin Ear Therapy to be an incredible support to my practice. One of the techniques I use is foot reflexology, so it was an easy transition to the ear, and not taxing on the hands at all. The presentation of the material was easily understood; so easy, in fact, that I was utilizing Teishin on my clientele prior to the completion of the class with great success.”

“The Barefoot Medicine model is an excellent approach to preventive care as well as management of chronic disease. We hope to use it to train our local participants in how to care for elders and how to avoid more serious complications of common disease. By offering people simple and easily applied techniques to alleviate pain, stress and other problems, we are helping our population avoid the more serious diseases that require more expensive and elaborate interventions. I’ve worked with the techniques and practices I learned to treat chronic pain and stress for my father and for other friends with serious issues in this area.”

“I have introduced my clientele to the Teishin Ear Therapy as a completion to their therapeutic massage session. The results are just incredible. What I’ve witnessed, and what they have experienced is beyond any single technique I have used to date. I’m also generating new clients by making myself available to walk-in demos. The looks on their faces are of disbelief after being in pain, having a headache, etc. and then having instantaneous relief.”

“Christian’s seminar brought our medicine into startling focus. Within hours, my diagnosis of the most critical TCM patterns became faster and more reliable. A much needed guide through the bewildering profundity of our medicine, Christian’s methodical process is rooted in both experience and impeccable scholarship.”

“Upon arriving to Guatemala, within myself I had an agenda of what I was coming here for – To work as a Barefoot Doctor in the area of my expertise Auriculotherapy/Massage Therapy. The moment I arrived at San Marcos, all the mental ideas were gone. I was faced with the Beauty of Nature starring right at me. I allowed myself submerge with the experiences as they came and left. I took in every moment as my last breath. I observe carefully the people, women and children specially. I wanted to know what they where feeling and thinking. I came to realize many of us – live in our own world and forget there is a huge universe out of our little one. I felt one little ant faced with the BIG mountain I came to walk once, twice a day. Being in the presence of people with health issues affecting their lives each and every day gives an important turning point in the purpose and meaning of why we are here. Our mission to service others who are in need. Guatemala left a huge impression in my life and just confirm my true commitment as a person of service. I would love to return to Guatemala in the near future. I met beautiful people, ate fresh foods , and just fell in love with the tranquility the rain forest gives your heart at waking up every morning and greeting it with a smile. I applaud everyone who made Guatemala there home and opened there doors to service. Thank you Christian Nix for opening your doors to your home and giving us the opportunity to explore the nature and beauty of what a Barefoot Doctor can do for me and humanity.”

“I had a great experience at Calacirya Foundation. I spent a summer there, and it taught me so much about non-profit work and the realities of the developing world. Christian and Emily are good people to work and live with – they’re informed and very helpful. Christian’s individualized teaching style makes it easy to get excited about your work. I learned a lot at Calacirya, about myself and about social justice. And I made some wonderful friends in the process. San Marcos is an interesting little town, and the lake and the mountains are absolutely gorgeous. I recommend this program to everybody looking for a quality abroad experience.”

“The hospital staff were delightful and the people who came to see us were open, appreciative, and amazing. I gained hands-on experience in 3 months that took me a year to gain in school. I definitely use much of the hands-on training and information gained from classes in my clinical practice to this day.”
